We used to play in the mornings,
afternoons too. Sleeveless shirts
on bloated figures, salty snacks
and ice cream cones to chew.
Rinse and wash with soap
our fat and slimy fingers.

How happy we were, children of our time.
Castle kings in games and in our minds.
Intact moss on trees we’ve yet to climb.
Sheltered need be, from life we’ve yet to find.

How happy we were,
nights and brighter stars.
Savor the moment’s what they say
but there’s only so much we can see
before tomorrow’s just another day;
past friends, past dreams, past lovers,
kinships turned to chance encounters.

But how happy we were, children of our time.
Castle kings in games and in our minds.
Intact moss on trees we’ve yet to climb.
Sheltered need be, from life we’ve yet to find.
